WHO IS PERCY WEASLEY?

NEW CHARACTER ANALYSIS TO COME SOON!

Character Overview: Percy Weasley is a character from JK Rowling's Harry Potter series. He is, in my opinion, one of the most mysterious and interesting characters in the series. This is largely due to the fact that JK Rowling has explored Percy very little in the first four books.

Percy is the third of the seven Weasley children. He is currently (as of the end of Book IV) an employee of the Ministry of Magic after graduating from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as Head boy at the end of Book III.

Chris Rankin portrayed an excellent Percy Weasley in the Warner Bros. movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Rankin is a native of New Zealand, where he lived his first six years before moving to the United Kingdom.

PERCY ON PERCY: Percy is just a regular wizard yearning for attention. He utterly suffers from the "Middle Child Syndrome" and uses his knowledge to stand out. He has set out a lofty goal - Minister of Magic in England - and is determined to reach the top.

This, however, posts an interesting question. At what lengths will Percy go to reach his goal? Would he venture to the dark side to fulfill this dream? Will he "pull a Crouch" and betray a family member to get where he wants?

My answer is this. Percy is a very complex character. I'm sure the Sorting Hat took his time with Percy on deciding where to put him. Clearly, he's brave. Otherwise he would have not been sorted into Gryffindor. But he could have easily been sorted to the other three houses. Percy is very dedicated [Hufflepuff]. He's obviously very smart [Ravenclaw] since he graduated Head Boy of his class. And as you all know, his most striking characteristic is his ambition[Slytherin]. However, Percy does have his boundaries.

In my opinion, Percy is not one to shove his way to the top at all costs. While Percy comes off as a snobby know-it-all, he does have a gentle and fun side. Some examples include:

  • He had a steady girlfriend, Penelope Clearwater, in his sixth and seventh years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
  • Percy was one of the loudest people in Book One when Ron was awarded 50 points for his part in the rescue of the Sorcerer's stone. [Percy could be heard telling the other prefects, "My brother, you know! My youngest brother! Got past McGongall's giant chess set!" SS 305]
  • He was one of the rowdiest people cheering for Gryffindor when they won the Quidditch Cup in Book 3 [There was Percy, jumping up and down like a maniac, all dignity forgotten. PA 313]
  • While trying to cheer up Harry, Pecy reveals that he does have a fun side. Since Harry couldn't go to Hogsmeade because he didnt have a permission form, Percy said, "They make a fuss about Hogsmeade, but I assure you, Harry, it's not all it's cracked up to be. All right, the sweetshop's rather good, and Zonko's Joke Shop's frankly dangerous, and yes, the Shrieking Shack's always worth a visit, but really, Harry, apart from that, you're not missing anything." [PA 151]

This feels like a college research paper on Percy Weasley...lol

So in conclusion, I think Percy will come up short on his quest for the Ministry post, but will reach a very high ranking and, at the same time, will be well-respected by his peers, though he may not be liked by many due to his slight arrogance.
